Android is an open-source mobile operating system based on a modified version of the Linux kernel and other open-source software for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. It is developed by a consortium of developers called the Open Handset Alliance and is commercially sponsored by Google. Android was initially released on a device on September 23, 2008.
