Byte

Posted: May 2, 2019 | by Michael Bright

A byte is a unit of data that usually represents eight binary digits or bits depending on the architecture. In some computer architectures, it is the smallest addressable unit of memory. For these reasons, depending on the architecture, bytes can be found to range from 1bit to 48bits.

In contrast and Octet is always guaranteed to be eight bits long. A byte is usually abbreviated as uppercase ‘B’.
