The FTP over SSL, also known as FTPS, or FTP-SSL and FTP Secure is an extension to File Transfer Protocol (FTP) that adds support for the Transport Layer Security (TLS). Formerly, the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) cryptographic protocol was used but is no longer permissible.

FTPS is different from SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) which uses Secure Shell (SSH) protocol.
