The Hypertext Transfer Protocol, commonly known as HTTP is an application-level protocol for distributed, collaborative, hypermedia information systems that forms the basis for communication on the World Wide Web. It is a request-response protocol that sets rules for transferring files such as text, images, video, audio, documents, etc.
Hypertext Transfer Protocol presumes a reliable underlying transport layer protocol such as Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). It is not unusual to find HTTP using unreliable protocols such as the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and Simple Service Discovery Protocol (SSDP) in certain cases.
