The Apple iPhone is a line of smartphones designed and marketed by Apple Inc. using Apple’s iOS mobile operating system.

The iPhone with a user interface built around a multi-touch screen was the first mobile device to introduce the multi-touch technology.

Described as a phone, the iPhone does so much more in addition to making phone calls and SMS messaging including connecting to cellular networks or Wi-Fi, browse the web, take pictures, play music and send and receive emails, run apps downloaded from the App store which add through third party apps adds virtually unlimited features.

Development of the iPhone began in 2004, working on the confidential Project Purple with a team of 1,000 employees led by hardware engineer Tony Fadell, software engineer Scott Forstall and design engineer Sir Jonathan Ive.

Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone to the world on January 9, 2007, at the Macworld 2007 convention at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The first models went on sale in the United States on June 29, 2007, at 6:00 pm.

On July 11, 2008, Apple released the iPhone 3G with the iPhone 4S being announced on October 4, 2011. On September 12, 2012, Apple announced the iPhone 5, while on September 9, 2014, Apple announced the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus.

iPhone 7 and 7 Plus where released on n September 7, 2016 and iPhone 8 and 8 Plus on September 12, 2017.

September 12, 2018, saw the introduction of the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR with iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max being unveiled on September 10, 2019.

iPhone 12 and 12 Pro series were virtually announced on October 13, 2020 due to the pandemic as was the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro series on September 14, 2021.

The iPhone 14 and 14 Pro series were announced on September 7, 2022.
