Linux is a family of open-source Unix-like operating systems called distributions or distros based on the Linux kernel. The operating system kernel was first released on September 17, 1991, by Linus Torvalds. Some examples of distributions include Arch Linux, CentOS, Debian, Fedora, Gentoo, Mint, Red Hat, Ubuntu, etc.
