Modem

Posted: June 9, 2019 | by Michael Bright

A modem or modulator-demodulator is a hardware device or software (softmodem) that converts data into a format suitable for transmission over a network from one computing device to another historically over telephone wires and more recently over fiber optic cables or wireless means.

The goal of the modem is to encode data into a signal format that can be transmitted reliably over long distances and decoded when the signal arrives at the destination.

Modems are used to transmit mobile communication, broadband internet, wi-fi and satellite communications among others.
