Unreal Engine 4.16 Release is now Available

Unreal Engine 4.16 has been announced for general availability. This new version comes with new features and a host of updates that include bug fixes, performance enhancements and improvements.

Unreal Engine is an open source and cross platform game engine used to develop video games, animation, simulations and graphics related operation. It was initially released in 1998 and is primarily written in C++ programming language.

It is developed by Epic Games and is the engine behind several block buster games including Unreal, Deus Ex, Duke Nukem, Harry Porter and Star Trek series, Bioshock, Tom Clancy’s series, Assassin’s Creed series, Mass Effect series, Mortal Kombat and Batman Series and more.

Highlights of the Unreal Engine 4.16 Release

New features include Volumetric Fog which allows you to add mood and ambience to your scenes as well as simulate dust, smoke, clouds and more. Image-Based (FFT) Convolution for Bloom allowing users to use use custom bloom kernel shapes.

Also new includes Distance Field Lighting Optimizations making Distance Field Ambient Occlusion and Ray Traced Distance Field Shadows have an improved 30-50% faster. Lightweight Rigid Body Simulation allows users to create hordes of physically-simulated characters.

There is a new Low-level Clothing Simulation which uses the NVIDIA NvCloth clothing solver which replaces the APEX clothing solver. Developers can now build and release games for the Nintendo Switch! There is also a new workflow in the VR Mode in Unreal Editor. VR also comes with new physics simulations, Smart Snapping and Edit sequences.

Xbox One now renders with DirectX 12. It now also supports the new WebAssembly standard (WASM) for HTML5 which is the fastest and most efficient way to compile and run C++ for the web. WebGL2 is also supported in the engine.
