US Spending on Video Games Set a Record for Quarterly Sales

The report states that sales of video games in the US hit a record of $10.86 billion between January and March of this year. This marks a 9% increase over a year ago.

All signs point to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is according to a post made by the NPD Group.

“A record first quarter driven by digital content spend across console, mobile and PC gaming platforms” as stated in the post.

The best-performing titles of the first quarter include games such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, DOOM Eternal, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, Fortnite, Grand Theft Auto V, Minecraft, MLB The Show 20 and NBA 2K20.

There was also strong growth in sales of Nintendo Switch hardware, as was the sales of video game accessories, including gamepads, headsets, cases, and other peripherals.

With more games coming out this year such as the long-awaited but controversial The last of Us 2, and the release of the next-generation consoles, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, further growth is expected in the video game industry.
