A modem or modulator-demodulator is a hardware device or software (softmodem) that converts data into a format suitable for transmission over a network from one computing device to another historically over telephone wires and more recently over fiber optic cables or wireless means.<\/p>\n
The goal of the modem is to encode data into a signal format that can be transmitted reliably over long distances and decoded when the signal arrives at the destination.<\/p>\n
