We did reserve some of our comments for the February report.<\/p>\n<p>The TIOBE index is the best source for anyone wanting to get details on the popularity of programming languages. Updated once a month, The is calculated from information on the number of skilled engineers world-wide, courses offered and software vendors. Popular search engines are also factored in when calculating the ratings.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>What is the Highlight of the TIOBE Index for February 2016?<\/h2>\n<p>The simple answer is Java. Since 2014 Java has made some enormous gains into the cementing its position at the top of the ratings. We believe this can be attributed to the interest in the Android ecosystem. Second to that is the Internet of Things (IoT). Again Java has shown itself to be a potential programming language of choice when it comes to connected devices.<\/p>\n<p>To make things more interesting, 2014 saw the release of Java 8. That came three years after the release of Java 7. With new releases comes the renewed interest in a programming language.<\/p>\n<p>The same can be attributed to languages like C++ which has seen tremendous steadfast growth year on year and this is significantly evident with the official release of C++11 and subsequent release of C++14 and discussions on C++17. Software Vendors have also been busy with compilers and libraries striving to get them compliant with the current standard popularly known as Modern C++.<\/p>\n<p>C++ is the only programming language in the top 20 rating that maintained its position at (3). Frankly speaking there is not much climbing left for any of the top 5 programming languages. Of the top ten languages, it is only C and JavaScript that have suffered a decline in ratings. C was toppled by Java while JavaScript dropped 3 spots.<\/p>\n<h2>Which Programming Languages Make the Top 20 Ranking?<\/h2>\n<p>Groovy another VM language like Java makes a big jump to land to position (20) one spot below PL\/SQL which dropped six spots. MATLAB rests easy at (18) just after R and Swift respectively.<\/p>\n<p>D, Objective-C and Assembly Language take the next three spots. It is worthwhile to note that Assembly Language has dropped two spots since December but remains strong compared to February 2015 thirteen spots higher. Visual Basic and Ruby close out the boundaries into the top 10.<\/p>\n<p>Taking position (10) is Delphi\/Object Pascal followed by JavaScript and Perl. At (7) is Visual Basic .NET, then PHP and Python chase down C#.
