Cygwin Library v2.5.2-1 has been announced for immediate availability. This update is viewed as a minor release. The library comes primarily with bug fixes and a few touches internally.

Cygwin is a free tool that allows Microsoft Windows users to have a Unix-like environment and command-line interface. It provides a native binding for Windows-based applications, system resources, and data with other applications. That allows you to access those applications from within the Cygwin environment.

Its main API compatibility layer is a dynamic-link library (DLL) which provides the POSIX API. It is free and open source software, released under GPL License version 3.

It also consists of tools that provide the necessary functionality to access the command-line interface.

One of the most notable announcements surrounding this version of Cygwin is that it becomes the last versions to officially retain Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 support. Again Cygwin Library v2.5.2 becomes the first Cygwin release with the Cygwin DLL licensed under LGPLv3. It is good to note that at this time it is only the DLL that is affected by the change in Licensing.

The rest of the changes center around bug fixes and minor feature update of which you can read about here. You can then download the new update from this getting started page.

Cygwin Library v2.5.2-1 has been announced for immediate availability.
