Microsoft has announced the ASP.NET Core 1.0 Release. This comes one year after the original version of ASP.NET got released into the market.
This release comes in the heels of the release of .NET Core 1.0. The announcement was made at the Red Hat DevNation conference which is taking place in Moscone North, San Francisco from June 26 to 29, 2016.

ASP.NET Core is the next generation ASP.NET framework. It is a cross-platform open-source web application framework. ASP.NET Core is available for Microsoft Windows, Linux, and OS X and is developed by Microsoft in collaboration with the wider community.
Another thing to note is that ASP.NET Core is a modular framework that runs on the full .NET Framework on Windows while on other operating systems it relies on the cross-platform .NET Core.
